What are implant retained dentures?

Unlike traditional dentures which sit over the gums and are held in place via an adhesive, implant retained dentures are fixed to the jaw via implants, with the prosthetic dentures clipped in place on top of them.

Why choose implant retained dentures?

Traditional dentures can help return function to the mouth, but many patients find them uncomfortable and unstable. Dentures have a tendency to slip in the mouth, and they can be awkward to take care of in the long-term. Some patients even find that they’re unable to eat their favourite foods due to the unstable nature of their dentures.

With implant retained dentures, patients are provided a completely stable foundation for their dentures. Fixed to the jaw via titanium pegs that act as the new ‘root’ for the prosthetic dentures, they closely mimic the look and feel of healthy natural teeth. Patients can eat what they want – including steak, apples, and crunchy carrots – as well as feeling more confident when they smile.

What is the treatment process like?

We’ll first have to make sure you’re a suitable candidate for the treatment with an X-ray, which will let us know if there is enough healthy jawbone present to accept the implant. We’ll then place the implant during your first appointment, which will be done under local anaesthetic so you don’t feel a thing.

There’ll then be a short wait of a few months while we allow the implants and jaw to successfully fuse together before we place your new personal dentures. In the interim, you can continue wearing your current dentures or we can provide you with a temporary set for your comfort.
