How to Clean Your Invisalign Aligners (And What to Avoid)

Invisalign aligners are a brilliant step towards a straighter, more confident smile – but to keep them working effectively (and looking their best), they need a bit of TLC.

At Islington Smiles, we want to make sure your Invisalign journey is as smooth and comfortable as possible. Keeping your aligners clean not only helps prevent discolouration and odour but also keeps your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.

Here’s our expert guide on how to care for your Invisalign aligners – plus what to steer clear of.

The Right Way to Clean Your Aligners

1. Rinse every time you remove them

Whether you’re popping them out for a meal or your morning coffee, give your aligners a quick rinse under lukewarm water. This helps wash away saliva and bacteria before they build up.

2. Brush them gently

Use a soft toothbrush (not the one you use for your teeth) and a small amount of clear, unscented liquid soap. Gently brush all surfaces of the aligners, then rinse thoroughly.

3. Soak daily

Soaking your aligners once a day helps keep them fresh and clear. Invisalign sells their own cleaning crystals, but denture cleaning tablets also do the trick. Just pop them in a glass of lukewarm water with the cleaning solution and soak for about 15–30 minutes.

4. Keep your case handy

Whenever you’re not wearing your aligners, store them in their protective case. This keeps them clean, safe, and prevents them from being knocked and misshaping.

What to Avoid When Cleaning Your Aligners

Even with the best intentions, there are a few common mistakes that can damage or discolour your aligners. Here’s what to avoid:

✖️ Toothpaste

Most toothpastes are too abrasive and can scratch the aligners, making them appear cloudy or dull.

✖️ Hot water

Never use hot or boiling water – it can warp the plastic and affect the fit of your aligners.

✖️ Coloured or scented soaps

These can stain the aligners or leave behind an unpleasant taste. Stick to clear, mild, fragrance-free options.

✖️ Eating or drinking with them in

Only water is safe to drink while wearing aligners. Food and coloured drinks can stain or warp them and could trap sugars or acids against your teeth, increasing the risk of decay.

Clean Aligners = A Healthier Smile

Cleaning your Invisalign aligners properly is a small daily habit that makes a big difference. Not only does it help keep your treatment discreet and odour-free, but it also supports your oral health as your teeth gradually move into place.
